7 Emergency Preparedness Tips for National Safety Month

Safety should be top of mind year-round, but we give it special attention in June. National Safety Month is the perfect time to reflect on your safety plans and practices and see if you have any room for improvement. Successful safety starts with being prepared, so here are eight emergency preparedness tips.

1. Develop a fire plan.

Gather your family and walk throughout your home, taking note of windows, doors, and other exits. Make sure there’s a functioning smoke alarm in each room. Choose a place where everyone in your family would meet in case of fire and do some fire escape drills.

2. Make a communication plan.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that you create a family emergency communication plan, in three steps.

3. Scope out the safest spots in your home for various natural disasters.

The best place to be in your house during a flood is certainly not the best place to be during a tornado warning. Knowing exactly which room/area to go to ahead of time will help things go more smoothly in a crisis. Write down a list of natural disasters in your area and determine where you’ll go if they occur.

4. Put emergency kits in your home and vehicles.

Find out what to include.

5. Learn CPR.

350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the U.S., and almost 90% of those incidents result in death. By learning CPR, you can be ready to help a friend, family member or even a stranger.

6. Reevaluate your insurance plan.

Take a look at your medical, home and car insurance to make sure it’s the smartest plan for you.

7. Practice!

Keep refreshing your safety skills to ensure you’re prepared if and when the need arises.
