5 Safety Tips for National Red Cross Month

Each March, we celebrate the Red Cross’s humanitarian efforts. Some of our favorite safety tips from the amazing group that helps keep us safe and healthy:

1. Prepare an Emergency Car Kit.

The Red Cross specifies that this kit should include “high protein snacks, water, First Aid materials, flashlight, small battery-operated radio, an emergency contact card with names and phone numbers, extra prescription medications and important documents or information you may need.” One crucial element for your Emergency Car Kit is a noisemaking device, such as a Sport & Safety Horn. An item like this allows you to attract the attention of nearby homeowners and oncoming vehicles, including possible police cars.

2. Be Mindful of Home Fire Risks.

Things to avoid: smoking in bed; keeping flammable objects within three feet of ovens, stoves, space heaters, etc.; leaving matches and lighters within reach of children; and leaving portable heaters on. Develop a home fire escape plan.

3. Keep Your Food Safe During Power Outages and Emergencies.

Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed. This will keep foods cold and safe for at least two hours. In the short term, eat shelf stable foods like canned goods. If the power outage is projected to last more than 2 to 4 hours, pack the most crucial items in your fridge into coolers with ice, keeping the temperature under 40 degrees.

4. Follow the Earthquake Safety Checklist if you Live in Earthquake Prone Areas.

This thorough guide will help you prepare for, get through and recover from earthquakes.

5. Enjoy the Water with Safety in Mind.

Always swim in areas with lifeguards and use the buddy system. This increases the chances of others noticing if you’re in distress. Don’t leave children unattended and instill in them the knowledge that they must ask permission before approaching the water. Wear life jackets! What to do if someone is struggling in the water:
